Dr. Moses Amadasun
Dr Moses Amadasun is a man that has gone through the various stages of the engineering profession: having been a technician, technologist, Engineer, Teacher & Researcher. He started work as a technician-in-training in 1974 with then Posts & Telecommunications (P & T) Department of the Ministry of Communications, then went on to the P & T Training School, Oshodi, Lagos, after which he became a technologist in the area of Microwave Radio Transmission Systems. Thereafter, he studied at the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), and graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Electronics / Electrical Engineering in 1982.
He went back to P & T after his NYSC and worked as the Area Engineer in Akure, Ondo State, the principal responsibility of which was the connection of major towns in the state with the capital – Akure via Microwave Radio. In 1984, Dr. Amadasun started a career in academics in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the then Bendel State University (now Ambrose Alli University) Ekpoma.
He proceeded in 1984 to Imperial College of Science & Technology, University of London for a PH.D programme, which he completed in 1988 and afterwards joined the academic staff of the university. During his period in academics, he specialized in the domain of Digital Image Processing and Pattern Recognition, with applications in Remote Sensing, Robotics and Biomedical Engineering.
He returned to Nigeria in 1992 having gained employment with then Elf Petroleum Nigeria Limited, now TotalEnergies E&P Nigeria Limited (TEPNG) in the Department of Telecommunications. There, he was in charge of the BIZNET (a satellite-based transmission project) that enabled the company to establish voice and data communication with its new offshore field of OML100 – Odudu. He left in 1995 on cross-posting to France to work at the Elf Group HQ where he worked on ICT projects for Elf Subsidiaries in Angola, Netherland, Norway and the United Kingdom. On his return in 1997, he became the User Support Manager, where he was involved in the migration of the company’s micro-computers to new technologies as well established the first functional ICT Client Support Desk for the Company.
In 2002, Dr. Amadasun returned to the Telecommunications Department as Telecoms Manager and left in 2006. During this period, he carried out an aggressive programme of bandwidth expansion between the company locations in Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Abuja through the use of leased circuits from NITEL and other service providers, and also carried out an intensive programme of staff recruitment and development. During the same period, he was the Chairman of the Telecoms Subcommittee of the OPTS (the Oil industry group), whereby in addition to his responsibility as Telecoms Manager of his company, he also had a responsibility for liaison/negotiation with the relevant authorities, as well as seeking solutions to the telecom problems/needs of the oil and gas industry.
From 2006 till his retirement in 2014, he worked on the development of the IPP project of TEPNG, where he eventually retired as the General Manager, IPP Business. Dr. Amadasun has published Papers, Articles and given lectures in the area of Digital Image Processing and Pattern Recognition, Telecoms, Oil & Gas, and the Nigerian Electricity Industry. Some of these include the paper he presented at the Offshore West Africa (OWA) conference in 2005 titled “Managing the Telecom Challenge for Oil and Gas activities in Nigeria’s Deep and Ultra Deep Offshore”, which form the conceptual basis for the “Fibre Optic Transmission Offshore Nigeria” (FOTON) project of the Oil and Gas Industry in Nigeria. In May 2013, he delivered an inaugural lecture at an event of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronics (NIEEE) titled “The Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry: Status, Challenges and Some Ways Forward” that has become one of the reference papers on the Nigerian Electricity Industry in the Archives of the NIEEE.
Dr Amadasun has been a member of the Board of Directors of International Center for Energy (ICE) West Africa since 2016 and is currently the Chairman of the Board. He is a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), a Fellow of NIEEE, and a Fellow of the Mentoring and Career Development Institute of Nigeria (MDCIN), and he is married with four children.
